Vaping Etiquette

Vaping Etiquette

by Clayton Musselman

As of August 2016, it was estimated that the world’s population of humans was at 7.4 billion. Barring a pandemic or meteor strike, it’s only going to keep rising. That’s a lot of people, a lot of humans that we have to communicate with and tolerate. So what’s the one thing that keeps our planet from degenerating into Mad Max: The Home Game? Manners. If you bump into someone, you say, “Excuse me.” We don’t blast music from our car stereo in the middle of the night. When it comes to using our vape hardware, the same concept holds.

But vaping is a new technology and a new fad, which means that those of us who love our e-cigs occasionally have to navigate tricky social situations. While we might want to just yell out, “If people don’t like it, they can just deal with it,” and smugly puff away sometimes, that attitude is a great way to not only make life harder for us, but for vapers in general. Read on for a few tips for practicing good vaping etiquette.

  • If you’re in public, and you’re thinking a couple of puffs from your e-cig would be nice, ask first. Again, since many people and institutions are getting used to this new technology, there are going to be different responses. Some people have done their homework on vaping, and they have no problem with it. Others think it’s exactly like smoking, and they’ll ask you to take it outside. If so, be cool and take it outside. By doing that, you’re not only being responsible, but you’re also reinforcing the perception that vapers are considerate human beings.
  • Ever heard of “stealth vaping?” Just like it sounds, it’s the process of covertly puffing on your e-cig, presumably in a place where you’re not supposed to be doing so. It’s also rude. We know you don’t always want to patiently explain to people that your vapor is not a carcinogen, or deal with the hostility of people who dislike smokers and assume that vaping is the same way. There’s even equipment for sale that can help you to stealth vape. Problem is, it just makes it seem like the rules don’t apply to us vapers. They do, and stealth vaping just makes all of us look bad.
  • You know how, with smoking cigarettes, blowing a huge cloud of smoke in someone’s face is a lousy thing to do? The same goes for vaping. One of the benefits of e-juice high in VG is billowing clouds. Those can be really cool, but nobody wants a face full of it, not even other vapers.
  • Yes, there’s vaper snobbery. Some vapers have spent a lot of time and money creating a custom-made device, and they sometimes sneer at other people using simple disposable e-cigs. If you love your vaporizer and you’ve created something that looks like a steampunk creation, that’s awesome. But everybody has different wants and needs when it comes to vaping. Offer advice, but stay off your high horse.
